This website represents an overview of the surfboards we have made and some of the work we have done from 1999–2025. In 2026 we launched a second-generation surf brand, Wegener Tool Co. with our daughter Sunday Wegener. At Wegener Tool Co we aim to provide all the tools you need to shape your surfing life.
About Tom Wegener
Noosa · 2024Tom has been shaping surfboards since the late 1970s. He grew up in California, studied as a lawyer, and moved to Noosa in 1996 in pursuit of the perfect point-break wave.
Through the Ancient Hawaiian Alaia, the Tuna and the Original Tool Surfboard Alaiana, paulownia, planes, cork, alaia, and many of his shapes have ended up in galleries — but the goal has always been to build a board that puts the surfer back in conversation with the wave. In 2005, with co-shapers Jacob Stuth and Jye Byrnes, Tom started Wegener Surfboards with the goal of opening a Tom Wegener Surfboards Lab. He continues today.

The Paulownia Sheet Method

- Paulownia core
Even, light, strong — about 30% lighter than balsa with the same buoyancy.
- Cork rails and deck
Soft on the body, water-resistant, and a renewable harvest from Portugal.
- EPS for foil
Light and responsive in the rocker, never in contact with the rider.
- Safe to build at home
No toxic chemicals — shape it in the shed with hand tools.
